The 955 Solar sits at the top of Garmin’s range-topping Forerunner model lineup, and it arrives loaded with more features than most riders will ever need to shake a stick at. Training data flows from every angle — the watch functions as an activity tracker, a GPS unit, and a health monitor all at once. What it does, it does in great detail.
For training purposes, the 955 Solar acts like a personal coach on your wrist. It lets you tap into a vast amount of data made possible by two light diodes on the back of the watch, which track your heart rate and your heart rate variability throughout the day and night. Using these numbers, the watch lets you receive detailed feedback on your performance, track your progression over weeks and months, assess your readiness before a big ride, and plan your recovery afterwards.
When it comes to navigation, the large touchscreen makes life easy — you can zoom in on the maps to spot details and splits in the route, making it straightforward to re-route if you miss a turn or get lost.
Battery life is just as impressive as the other features. We tested the 955 Solar over four months through the darker winter months, and it delivered more than a week of use on every charge. Naturally, the solar option becomes far more attractive if you live in sunnier climes — those of us in the UK might prefer to save a few pounds and opt for the regular 955.

The Forerunner 265 left me nothing short of impressed. A significant aspect of this watch is the extensive support it draws from the Garmin ecosystem — the software functions available across many of their devices and smartwatches are all present here, giving you a deeply connected experience from day one.
What really sets the 265 apart from the range is its ability to live with it every day without feeling like you’re wearing just a smartwatch. It is more complicated than a fashion watch, of course, but it operates as a complete sports watch that strikes a better balance than other Garmin models in this range. It overlaps with watches from Apple in terms of everyday appeal, but remains more sports-oriented if that is your preference.
A significant part of the appeal is the built-in battery life. Without Garmin’s solar function, this watch performed much better than other Garmin smartwatches — and significantly better than the Apple Watch Series 8, which will do a day, if you’re lucky. The best part is that it will fully charge in under an hour, so you won’t be without it for long.
I fell in love with the Forerunner 265 during testing. It is so comprehensive that it is hard to see why you would need anything more. My only wish was for more accurate heart rate monitoring — I found myself reaching for a chest monitor to obtain more accurate data during cycling. Otherwise, this is an excellent value smartwatch for cyclists, and near perfect for the price.

As a cyclocross racer who must change bikes mid-race, and as someone who has dipped into the world of being a triathlete, my belief has always been that a dedicated bike computer will likely always be the better option. But having tested the Coros Pace 3 extensively, I’ve come around. It does very well as a smart watch and is genuinely ideal for cycling across a wide range of activities.
What immediately stands out is how light and comfortable the Coros feels at just 29g with the nylon strap. The screen is easy to use and read on and off the bike. You can play around with the activity screens and heavily customise them to your needs across sports. As someone who was never a fan of touch screen watches on the move, the two-button function here is refreshingly straightforward and intuitive.
There is big competition from Garmin and their ecosystem — the way Garmin’s software can support all of your Garmin devices together is hard to beat. But the Coros app keeps things simple, clean, and very usable. Coros software is also significantly faster when loading the watch and finding a GPS system, which makes for the best experience when you’re ready to ride. Battery life is another area where Coros have nailed it.
Overall, the Pace 3 really keeps ‘pace’ with Garmin. It nearly got me away from my beloved Wahoo Elemnt Rival — a device at a similar price but with considerably less function that is a few years old and due for an update. Coros have built a very competitive watch for people who are willing to look past the big ‘G’, and there is significantly better value to be had here.

Suunto has some serious credentials when it comes to navigation tools. Their founder is credited with creating the first water-filled compass, which delivered improved stability over the fresh-air filled models of its era. So unsurprisingly, the Finnish brand has continued to excel in this department — and the Vertical smartwatch is a shining example. Simply put, the navigation on this watch is impeccable.
Why? The maps are clear and easy to read, with the AMOLED screen a serious contributor to that fact. The detail and amount of information on offer is impressive, and the level of control to match. The GPS is as precise as you could wish for, thanks to the employment of a dual-band GPS/GNSS system that communicates with all five major satellite systems. For cycling, it proved great at tracking routes — which you have to load in the app beforehand — and it delivered results more accurate than my Garmin head unit.
There are plenty of other technical features, too: sleep tracking, heart rate variability, blood oxygen sensors, altimeters, a barometer, and more. However, the heart rate monitoring during my testing proved to be less than accurate, at one point having me averaging over 200 beats per minute during a run.
As for looks, the Vertical is suitably outdoorsy. The titanium case is finished in lovely matte grey, and the sapphire crystal glass proved to be robust — handling a few knocks without scratching, though the body did pick up a few dings along the way.
Battery life is another area where the watch excels. It has solar harvesting, but even with it off and subjected to my endless scrolling through features and menus, the Vertical powered on and on and on. It is best in class in this regard.

The Garmin Venu 2 Plus boasts a very bright Amoled display that outshines many smartwatches and cycling computers. You can set it to be always on, or have it light up whenever you move your wrist to see the face. There are loads of different case and strap options to match your style.
Control comes via three buttons and a touchscreen, and the Venu 2 Plus is fast to charge. It has good battery life too — with GPS recording active, we got around 7 days between charges. Voice commands are also available, actioned through the smartphone app on your paired phone.
There is good functionality to record cycling and other sports, and to view metrics as you exercise. You can pair the Venu 2 Plus with cycling peripherals including a power meter, heart rate monitor for cycling, or the Garmin Varia radar/light.

The Coros Apex 2 Pro brings a five-LED heart rate measurement system that delivers genuinely accurate wrist-based readings. When we put it head-to-head against a chest strap, the numbers matched closely — which is not something you can say about every smartwatch on this list.
It links up quickly to the companion app and to Strava, and the huge number of customisation options available through the app means you can shape the experience to fit your exact training style. Sport profiles cover far more than just cycling and running, and the watch tracks sleep and heart rate variability around the clock when worn.
You can follow a GPX trace on the Apex 2 Pro, though unlike some devices it does not provide turn-by-turn directions. Where it really wins is battery life — Coros claims 30 days per charge with 75 hours of GPS tracking, and in our testing we met or even exceeded those figures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most sports activity trackers are designed rugged so they can withstand knocks and shocks during intense activity. They are usually waterproof enough for diving, too.
More basic models will have a plastic case and strap, but spend more and you will get a metal bezel or casing, a tougher glass face, and may even be able to purchase a metal strap.
If your primary goal is sports tracking, beware of flashy features. We have tested high-end smartwatches that are heavy and uncomfortable to wear, with sharp metal edges that dig into your wrist when holding the bars.
GPS tracking is vital. More basic smartwatches may piggyback from a smartphone for the duration of your rides, but now even Fitbit has built-in GPS in many of its fitness trackers.
Many multisport watches also come with barometers and altimeters, which are useful for producing accurate elevation profiles in your recorded data.
Keep in mind that more sensors mean a greater drain on battery life, leading to larger watches with bigger batteries.
Even if you only use it for cycling, your smartwatch needs to be water-resistant. As a starting point, we recommend an IP67 rating — IP is a rating of the watch’s ingress protection, and the higher the number, the better the protection.
Some smartwatches have a touchscreen interface, although most work just as well with an array of buttons. Touchscreens can be very intuitive and easy to use off the bike, but when you’re riding they can be awkward to operate — which is why having buttons as well is useful as a fallback.
The decision between touchscreen and buttons is more personal preference than anything else. Buttons have a more tactile feel, are much easier to use when wearing gloves, and guarantee impressions even in wet conditions. The quality of touchscreens and their performance in wet weather vary considerably from brand to brand.
On the other hand, touchscreen displays are often more aesthetically pleasing, with less bezel and sometimes with smaller screens. Usually, a touchscreen smartwatch will offer buttons too — and may only allow you to use the buttons to control functions during exercise, to prevent you from inadvertently stopping recording as you ride.
The best smartwatches include sophisticated battery management functionality that lets you eke out plenty of battery life between charges.
You can expect around a week of battery life from the best smartwatches when using them in smartwatch mode. That figure will drop significantly once you start to use the GPS chip to track your activities — but even so, the top performers should rival the best bike computers.
If you’re going long, a good cycling smartwatch should include the option to dial down battery-intensive functionality to add days to its runtime. That might mean lowering the sensitivity or sample rate for GPS tracking, turning off connectivity functions or in-built sensors, or simply powering up less of the screen.
Garmin has added to battery life by giving riders the option to choose solar charging in some of its smartwatches. We didn’t find it added much to battery life on the Fenix 6, but battery life has been significantly extended in its replacement, the Fenix 7. The Garmin Enduro is also solar-charged, and Garmin has claimed it can run for up to a year between charges in its lowest power mode and 95 days with low-power GPS tracking.
When it does come time to recharge, most smartwatches use a USB cable with a connector specific to your smartwatch.
You can expect route planning and navigation as standard in any smartwatch designed for sports. At a minimum, look for a breadcrumb trail of a pre-planned route — though the more sophisticated models will include a basemap too.
If you follow a pre-planned route, the best smartwatches will give you turn-by-turn instructions, just like a cycling computer. You may also get in-ride rerouting, although you might need to carry your smartphone with you for this feature to work.
Many models also offer features found in the best cycling computers, such as back-to-start routing, hill climb profiles, and weather alerts.
Before you buy, check the compatibility of your power meter or cadence sensors with the cycling smartwatch you are considering. Some watches don’t pair with external sensors at all, particularly those aimed at general fitness as well as cycling.
The best smartwatches for cycling include BLE connectivity to let you link up to these devices. Often you’ll get ANT+ connectivity too on devices specifically designed for cycling and multisport tracking.
Optical heart rate sensors work by lighting up your capillaries with an LED. As your blood pumps through, the density changes and the light reflects back differently — and the watch translates this into a beats-per-minute reading.
Although many smartwatches have wrist-based heart rate monitoring built-in, you may get a more accurate measurement if you wear a separate heart rate monitor strap, as movement and sweat at the wrist can affect how well the optical sensor works.
If you already have an HRM, check that your smartwatch will work with it — most modern HRMs broadcast both BLE and ANT+ signals.
Nearly all smartwatches track the same metrics as basic fitness trackers: step count, calorie burn, and sleeping habits. This data is usually integrated into a broader overview of your fitness, often with tips and advice on how to improve.

Most smartwatches include Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity to link to a smartphone app or computer app and upload activities wirelessly. The app will provide more health and exercise analysis and history, along with connectivity to Strava and training apps such as TrainingPeaks.
Screen size is obviously limited in a smartwatch compared to the best bike computers. Models with larger screens can get a bit chunky, so look out for a size that will feel comfortable to wear — especially if you’re planning to wear your smartwatch day and night for sleep tracking.
Just like with a bike computer, you can usually change what data is displayed on your screen, but you may need to limit how many fields are shown to fewer than with a cycling GPS. The small screen is more limiting with graphic content like routes and maps, where it may be difficult to zoom out or track around enough to see the bigger picture.
On the other hand, you can often set the smartwatch to vibrate to alert you to turns when navigating, or to incoming messages from your smartphone.
Attached to your wrist, you may find it harder to keep an eye on the metrics displayed on a smartwatch than on a cycling computer with its screen facing you. Some brands offer bar mounts to let you attach your watch to your bike for better visibility while riding.
If your exercise targets include triathlons, many smartwatches offer the ability to transition between activities automatically. The Wahoo Elemnt Rival majors on this with seamless transitions, while other brands like Garmin include this functionality as well.
Both these brands include functionality for mirroring, allowing your cycling computer to display data collected during your swim for a holistic view of your performance.
